Princeps Senatus Confirmed

After many months of chaos following the fall of the Empire, the Axxilian Republic finally enters an era of peace and prosperity at the hands of our new Princeps Senatus, Marcus Caecilius Denter. Surely the man who ended the street fights of the Populares and Optimates, of whom quarreled for control of the newly formed Republic (earned after our freedom from the Empire and the Ciutric Hegemony) will keep the peace and begin a new Axxilan golden age. The months of street battles, political power plays and death are now over, rebuilding the once great Republic begins. Currently, opposition from both parties are wondering whether the new Princeps will begin proscriptions; something that has not been done in thousands of years (hearkening back to the Republican era, before the fall of the Republic when the barbarians stormed down the gates). Staffers working for the new Princeps have declined to comment.

As a brief recap of recent events for those outside of Axxila tuning in for the first time - Once the Empire's grasp had left Axxila and the Ciutric's dynasty, the Pestages, were snuffed out of existence the citizens of Axxila (lead by both Patrician and Plebeian alike) revolted from what remained of the Ciutric garrison (also known by the derisive term - Etruscans) and murdered them to a man. So began the Republic the way it had fallen - blood. What unity these various parties had shattered shortly after and the planet fell to disarray as various parties vied for control of the newly independent planet. Demons that had laid dormant for hundreds of years reared their ugly heads again. While the Cursus Honorum was restored, it quickly devolved into chaos as not even the date of elections for the various position of the Republic could be agreed upon. In ancient times such chaos would often result in a dictator appointed for six months to restore order, but no man or woman held such esteem from the parties - a victim of foreign rule for so long. Soon Senatorial battles bled into the streets and gangs were fighting each other.

It was into this situation that former Commodore Marcus Caecilius Denter and his friend Quintus Fabius Pictor, former Imperial General, came home to. They were two of many thousands of Imperial veterans who managed to separate themselves from the Empire and make it home. Dismayed at what they saw, the old friends got together and began organizing the veterans of the wars. Soon, the legions of old were reformed from these veterans on the old Campus Martius. Using the storied traditions of the legions of old the Legio X Equestris, Legio VI Victrix and Legio II Ferrata, the men were formed and assigned to their cohorts. The warring Optimates and Populares attempted to woo the men into their camps but otherewise made no moves to thwart the organizing of the legions - feeling they were no real threat and were just discontented soldiers. Once M. Caecilius Denter and his ally marched on the city, both parties ceased their quarreling and in the Senate named a Pro-Consul to organize the defense of the city and the Senate. It was too little, too late and both sides had been decimated from the fighting and there was no time to arm and train a defense group. The three legions pushed aside the meagre resistance and seized the city.

Once in control of the city, martial law was declared and stability was in place for the first time in months. The people, happy for peace, offered Caecilius Denter  the position of Princpes Senatus, but he declined. He did not wish to take such a powerful posting and only wanted to restore the order of the planet and set the newly re-founded Republic to rights. It was during this time he re-established old rules and postings: The 12 tables protecting all citizens, the position of Tribune of the Plebeians, outlawing slavery and beginning public works to clean up the damage from the conflict and years of Imperial neglect. Again, he was offered the position of Princeps and again he declined. The Cursus Honorum was refined and reformed to make it a more fair representation of the planet and its peoples, expanding from the original 50 to its current 250. A third time he was offered and again he rejected. Finally, with the planet recovering from the chaos, he dismissed the legions and declared elections.

For a fourth and final time, the people demanded he take the position of Princeps Senatus - the position originally symbolic would now embody the true power in the Republic - he who controls the Princeps, controls the Republic. Smartly, Caecilius Denter did not accept the role, but also did not decline it. And thus, during the elections, he was elected as such by the Comitia Centuriata, Comitia Tributa and Concilium Plebis - confirmed by the Cursus Honorum and the newly appointed Censor. The Senators and the Censor all owed their current status and position to him and could not reject the will of the people; however, storm clouds loom over the horizon as bitter familial rival, Publius Claudius Pulcher, was elected as Co-Consul. Setting up the potential for future power struggle between the two power families, the various political parties of Axxila and the people.

So it is with that the report leaves us - the Princeps has taken office. The Populares and Optimates simmer with discontent. Axxila faces a bright, if not uncertain, future.
